Organizational Background: The mission of the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) is to improve the quality of life for low-income Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). We are a coalition of more than 100 community-based organizations spanning 21 states and the Pacific Islands. Collectively, the coalition improves the lives of over two million AAPIs who live in poverty by providing voice, tools, and shared knowledge to drive change. The coalition focuses on promoting economic vitality, civic and political participation, and racial equity through a broad range of strategies, from community organizing to financial services to the creation of affordable housing and community institutions.
Overview: National CAPACD seeks an experienced Deputy Director of External Affairs to create and lead strategies to reach broader and new audiences including developing an organization-wide fund development strategy to support an annual budget of $4-5 million and a staff of 15, and expanding National CAPACD’s voice and influence on key issues facing the AAPI community. The Deputy Director manages a team of four including a Fundraising Manager (to be hired by the Deputy Director), a grant writer (consultant), a Communications Manager, and a Senior Policy Advisor. The Deputy Director also serves on the Management Team and contributes to the overall strategic direction of the organization.

The Deputy Director of External Affairs reports to the Executive Director and works closely with Management Team on strategies that support the needs of a dynamic and growing organization and its membership. The Deputy Director has a central role in building the development and communications infrastructure. This includes designing and implementing comprehensive strategies for development, communications, policy and outreach, as well as managing an Advisory Council made up of corporate and nonprofit leaders.

The Deputy Director of External Affairs is responsible for positioning National CAPACD with major foundation, corporate, and public partners and works collaboratively with program directors to maintain and develop new funding relationships to support the organization’s programmatic and policy activities. The Deputy Director also leads the development of marketing materials, social media, website, direct mail, and media communications. The Deputy Director manages policy and advocacy efforts with coalition partners, federal agencies and elected officials.
Roles and Responsibilities Include:  Join the Executive Director as an outward-facing representative of the organization to foundations, corporations, major donors, partners, elected officials, and other strategic collaborations;  Develop and implement strategies to reach broader and new audiences, working closely with the communications and policy staff;  Build strong relationships and potential partnerships with advocates, think tanks, elected officials and other stakeholders;

 Identify, cultivate, and solicit new and existing donors, and corporate, government, and foundation partners;  Develop and implement National CAPACD’s annual fundraising plan in collaboration with Board of Directors and Management Team;  Manage Advisory Council and Board Fundraising Committee engagement;  Develop and oversee a fundraising tracking and management system;  Supervise a Fundraising Manager in the planning and implementation of the fundraising plan and organizing special events;  Supervise the Communications Manager in the development of marketing and other external communications strategies and support development of materials, including writing and editing o public statements and comments, and taking on other roles as needed;  Supervise the Senior Policy Advisor and support development of policy priorities and advocacy initiatives with input from the membership and program teams, and work closely with coalition partners, federal agencies and elected officials;  As a member of National CAPACD’s Management Team, the Deputy Director will contribute to the overall strategic direction, oversee the administration of the department, and invest in team-building and collaboration efforts.

Note: T ravel 5 - 6 times per year is required for this position.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; 5+ years of experience in nonprofit development and communications, with increasing levels of responsibility; demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and strong oral and written communications skills; experience with grant writing and grant management; a keen understanding that long-term success requires positive relationships with stakeholders; interest and passion for public policy. Must have excellent stakeholder management skills, including interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills necessary to build a broad base of coalition partners. Must be committed to supporting the community development needs of low-income and immigrant AAPI communities and willing to work in a fast-paced setting. Must be a team player with a demonstrated ability to work well in a small, highly collaborative environment.
Desired Qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent experience; knowledge of community development, asset building and issues impacting low-income AAPI communities; familiarity with individual donor campaigns; experience in nonprofit management at a senior level, including budgeting, supervising staff, and program administration.
Compensation: The Deputy Director of External Affairs is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Annual salary range is $80,000 - $105,000, depending on background and experience.
