Description

Founded in 1981 in partnership with whistle-blowers, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that works to expose waste, corruption, abuse of power, and other instances where the government fails to serve the public. We champion reforms to achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles. POGO has a $7 million annual budget that supports three projects and a staff of 39 employees.

POGO is looking for a talented Deputy Director of Investigations to help conduct, oversee, and execute hard-hitting investigative journalism involving the United States government.  The Deputy Director of Investigations will report to the Director of Investigations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in managing a nearly 10-person investigations team (which includes POGO employees, volunteers, and independent contractors at levels ranging from upstarts to senior investigative reporters).
  • Vet, plan, advance, edit, and support the publishing of investigations involving the federal government (including the setting of priorities for investigations and general project management).
  • Help investigators and POGO’s policy team craft fact-based reforms to achieve the organization’s mission.
  • Ensure ongoing professional development of the investigations team to expand their credentials, knowledge base, and skills.
  • Conduct and directly participate in investigations as other responsibilities allow and require.

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of 5 years of significant investigative experience involving government and/or corporate accountability—or demonstrated equivalent experience—with numerous examples of published work written for the general public.
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience. Experience managing teams of 3 or more people, or teams that have conducted investigations or research, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated track-record of leadership and management of complex investigative projects that have led to hard-hitting, published findings that break news is a huge plus.
  • Demonstrated track-record of leadership and management of short-term investigative projects that hit daily news cycles is a huge plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation and benefits:

  • Competitive nonprofit salary in the range of $85K-$95K.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 403(b) investment plan available, with employer retirement contribution once eligible.
