The Hitachi Foundation, a recognized innovator within philanthropy and a leader in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), seeks a Director of Strategic Communications to develop and execute strategies to expand business’ role in improving people’s lives and promote the work of the Foundation with key audiences.

            The mission of the Hitachi Foundation is to discover, demonstrate, and expand business practices that both measurably improve economic opportunities for low-wealth individuals in the United States and enhance long-term business value.  We believe that business has an essential role to play in addressing the complex global challenges of our time.   We believe US businesses that generate opportunities for low-wealth individuals to move up the wealth ladder result in business success, proving that there need not be a trade-off between people and profits and enabling the U.S. economy to once again support a vibrant middle class.

            Our signature programs— the Business and Work Program and the Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneurs Program—help us discover what can be done to make the pursuit of profit in business and the pursuit of healthy communities a symbiotic endeavor.

            As a small foundation, we achieve impact through a highly strategic approach to communications.  We are looking for a dynamic and creative Director of Strategic Communications who can work with our team to promote the Foundation as a thought-leader on the role of business in society and amplify the work of our programs. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing strategies to advance the mission of the Hitachi Foundation – to expand business’ role in improving peoples’ lives – raise its public profile and promote its work with key internal and external audiences;
  • Develop goals and objectives with regard to the communications elements of the Hitachi Foundation strategic plan, and provide guidance and support to achieve them;
  • Work closely with the Communications Fellow and the entire Foundation team and Hitachi corporate leaders within North America and globally to develop strategies that utilize traditional and social media, including prose, graphic design, audio and video presentations targeted to specialized audiences;
  • Research, develop, and enhance targeted messaging to match the goals of the Foundations programs;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists and thought leaders who focus on issues related to corporate social responsibility, entrepreneurship and philanthropy; and
  • Build the necessary internal systems and infrastructure to enable efficient, targeted marketing of the work of the Foundations programs.

The Director of Strategic Communications will report to the President and CEO. The Director will complete a two-person communications team with the potential for project-specific augmentation via consultants. 

Qualifications include:

  • A strategic thinker who can bring the creativity, energy, discipline and commitment needed to promote the Hitachi Foundation’s message and brand;
  • Superior written communication skills and strong oral communication abilities are essential, including capacity to communicate complex ideas compellingly to a variety of audiences;
  • Expertise in developing and implementing organizational strategic communications plans including, excellent judgment in producing persuasive material--written, visual, and electronic--that is appropriate to different platforms and audiences;
  • A high-level performer, with the ability to move rapidly in response to communications opportunities as they present themselves;
  • Advanced degree in journalism, business, public policy, marketing or other relevant field, and at least 10 years of experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively;
  • Personable, passionate, productive, and focused on advancing the mission of the Hitachi Foundation; and
  • Knowledge of the role of business in society is a plus.
