The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, one of the nation’s premier policy organizations, seeks a policy analyst for its State Fiscal Project.

The analyst will conduct timely and thorough research of state budget and tax issues and state anti-poverty policies; write policy papers; provide technical assistance to state-level policymakers around the country; and provide training and strategic advice to state-level nonprofit organizations. Work products will include short written analyses, longer reports, testimony to state legislatures, interaction with the news media, and public presentations.

The Center’s State Fiscal Project (SFP) works to ensure that all communities are economically secure and have the opportunity to thrive through responsible state tax and budget policies. SFP analyzes fiscal policy developments and proposals, develops policy ideas and advances improvements, and engages lawmakers, other organizations, and the media to encourage public debate on these issues. The team also coordinates and provides technical assistance to a network of 41 state-level policy groups engaged in on-the-ground state fiscal policy work.

Candidates for the position should have:

  • Two to five years’ experience working on tax and budget issues, especially as it relates to poverty, at the state or federal level as legislative staff, executive-branch staff, and/or independent researcher or advocate.
  • A relevant graduate degree;
  • Demonstrated skill/experience in developing state-level strategies to improve public policies.
  • A demonstrated capacity to organize complex work projects, especially those involving multiple stakeholders, and keep them on track;
  • Excellent quantitative and analytic skills, including a facility with spreadsheets and a penchant for accuracy;
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong writing and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated skill/experience in analyzing complex fiscal and anti-poverty policy issues and explaining those issues (both in writing and orally) to broader audiences; and,
  • A demonstrated commitment to reducing poverty and other social and economic inequities.
