Description

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is one of the nation's leading nonpartisan research and policy institutes. It focuses its work at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals. The Center has attained a national reputation for its unique capacity to blend rigorous, timely analyses with activities designed to enable policymakers and the media to make use of its work.

We are seeking a Manager of Operations and Special Projects to manage and coordinate key programmatic initiatives that advance the work of the Center’s State Fiscal Project team and the State Priorities Partnership. The Partnership is a network of 42 state-level organizations seeking to advance broad prosperity and reduce poverty and inequality through insightful policy analysis, sophisticated communications, and cutting-edge advocacy.

Responsibilities

As our State Fiscal Project team has grown, its operations have become more complex. This new position, which will report directly to our Senior Vice President for State Fiscal Policy, is in charge of taking the internal side of our operations to the next level of performance.

The role will evolve over time, and at a minimum will have three major areas of responsibility:

Program management:

  • Manage a complex, effective program of grants to state-level partner organizations, including maintaining a database, collecting reports from grantees, generating summary grant reports for purposes of program and financial management, and coordinating the participation of other team members in the process of awarding, monitoring, and evaluating;
  • Manage the State Policy Fellowship program, including recruiting a diverse pool of applicants, tracking applications, designing processes for their review and evaluation, ensuring strong professional development supports, etc.; and
  • Take on other special projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Finance and Operations:

  • In close collaboration with State Fiscal Project team leaders, coordinate the work that staff does to develop the department’s annual work plans and thrice-yearly departmental reviews;
  • Update and maintain departmental budget, and monitor contracts and other expenditures;
  • Serve as the team’s primary liaison with the Center’s operational departments including Finance and Information Technology; and
  • Solve other issues that arise, and develop and implement effective solutions.

Internal Communications and Knowledge Management:

  • Manage internal communications within the team and within the State Priorities Partnership, including an intranet site, a social networking site, and an anticipated CRM system;
  • Identify ways to strengthen our tools and technology to enhance teleworking for team members who work remotely and minimize disruption to work flow.

Qualifications

To be successful in this job, you will demonstrate excellent judgment, wisdom, and collaboration skills. More specifically, you will likely be:

  • A very strong critical thinker and problem-solver, able to communicate effectively in writing and in person, who brings a facilitative approach to support our team in making decisions that propel our work forward;
  • Fast-paced and detail-oriented with an ability to handle a large volume of work impeccably both through delegating and “rolling up your sleeves” to get the work done yourself as needed; and
  • Someone who blends high standards and rigor with a calm, collegial approach, a knack for working well with internal and external constituents, a  commitment to equity and inclusion, and a robust sense of humor.
  • Fundamentally, we want someone who loves making things work, directly and through others; who has the skills and seasoning to do that in our context; and who has a deep passion for economic and social justice and brings that passion to the job every day.

Additional desired qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public administration, nonprofit management, or related field;
  • Management experience (may include supervision or project management)
  • Superior computer skills a must; experience with SharePoint, CRMs, database management, and/or social networking administration strongly preferred.

The position is located in Washington, D.C.

Salary commensurate with experience; excellent benefits, including three health insurance options; dental and vision care; life and long-term disability insurance; retirement; MERP; DCAP; and generous vacation leave, sick leave, and holiday schedules.

Application: To apply, please email a resume and cover letter to settleson@gmail.com and include "CBPP-Operations Manager" in the email subject line. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. Please, no calls.
