Director of Foundations

 

 

The Center for Public Integrity, founded in 1989 by Charles Lewis, is one of the country's oldest and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative news organizations. Our mission is to enhance democracy by revealing abuses of power, corruption and betrayal of trust by powerful public and private institutions, using the tools of investigative journalism.

 

We are looking for a Director of Foundations who will be responsible for coordinating the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for the high volume of foundations that support the Center for Public Integrity. The Center for Public Integrity has a $9.2M budget, a significant amount of which comes from foundation support.

The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of successful fundraising experience working with foundations, be an excellent writer, possess the ability to translate complex investigative reporting stories into a compelling case for support, and have a passion for investigative journalism, social justice, and democracy and transparency. The Director of Annual Giving reports to the Chief Development Officer.

Responsibilities include:

 

Foundation Cultivation and Solicitation:

  • In conjunction with Chief Development Officer, set targets for finding, researching, qualifying foundation prospects and recommending and conducting appropriate course of cultivation.
  • Oversee and manage portfolio of foundations.
  • Manage proposal submission and resubmission.
  • Outline and conduct cultivation and stewardship for foundation portfolio.
  • Create and maintain plan for informing and securing lapsed funders.
  • Develop expertise in multiple issue areas as they pertain to foundation prospects and donors.
  • Support the Chief Development Officer in working with full portfolio of donors, including foundations, through research, producing reports, and preparing proposals.
  • Participate in meetings and travel with foundations.

 

Financial Management and Grants Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Maintain strong financial reporting through the use of Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge database.
  • Produce monthly Grant Deliverables document for executive team and managing editors.
  • Work closely with managing editors to procure reporting data and information for funders.
  • Ensure foundation deliverables and activities are recorded in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Oversee timely, quality grant reporting and ongoing stewardship for foundation awards.

 

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of seven years of successful fundraising experience working with foundations.
  • Ability to translate complex reporting themes into a compelling case for support.
  • Passion for investigative journalism, social justice, democracy and transparency.
  • Excellent writing and oral communications skills.
  • Strong database and financial management skills.
  • Demonstrated writing experience with a wide variety of development formats and templates.
  • Professional, diplomatic, and strategic in building relationships with funders.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Must be extremely organized and creative.
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with reporters, editors, and media partners.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A commitment to the values and mission of the Center.
  • Voracious reader and likes to laugh.

Some travel is required.
