Description

CENTER FOR PUBLIC INTEGRITY

Director of Annual Giving

The Center for Public Integrity, founded in 1989 by Charles Lewis, is one of the country's oldest and largest nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative news organizations. Our mission is to enhance democracy by revealing abuses of power, corruption and betrayal of trust by powerful public and private institutions, using the tools of investigative journalism.

We are looking for a talented Director of Annual Giving to work with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and senior staff to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual prospects and donors capable of making major gifts (with a focus on gifts of $10K+). Building on a current list of prospects who have been identified and cultivated over the past few years, the Director of Annual Giving will secure and expand support for the Center’s investigative journalism. The Director of Annual Giving will also take the lead on planning and building an on-line fundraising program and will be part of a dynamic, successful fundraising team.

The ideal candidate will bring at least five years of demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser, particularly in the area of major giving. S/he must have established skills identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospects, as well as the creativity, collegiality, energy and integrity to be part of a highly-motivated development team. Support from the organization’s CEO and board members makes this an ideal time to expand the organization’s burgeoning leadership giving program. The Director of Annual Giving reports to the Chief Development Officer.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys a lively, friendly workplace, an extraordinarily compelling mission, and a setting filled with dynamic ideas and game-changing journalism.

Responsibilities and Expectations Include:

  • Build a major gifts program, starting with an existing prospect list of 40-50 high net worth individuals, steward major donors from the organization’s under $10K donors
  • Research, rank and organize the current list of prospects and present an annual fundraising plan as part of the overall strategic plan for development.
  • Offer strategic counsel to the CEO, CDO, and board members, plus development colleagues, on individual donor relations.
  • Plan and participate in fundraising visits and calls with the CEO, CDO and board members, particularly the chair of the board.
  • Develop creative, cost-effective strategies for cultivating individual prospects.
  • Prepare proposals and cultivation/solicitation materials.
  • Prepare related correspondence for prospects and donors.
  • Work with Development Operations to fully utilize the department’s Raiser’s Edge database and Online Express platform to track prospects and manage existing donors.
  • As appropriate, and in coordination with the CDO and board members, promote and solicit planned gifts.
  • Plan and grow an online fundraising program in collaboration with the Sr. Manager of Development Operations and the Chief Development Officer.
  • Plan and execute cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Work toward the goal of ensuring that the revenue stream of major gifts ($10k and above) is between $1-$2 million annually.

Qualifications Include:

  • Strong commitment to the role of a free press in a democratic society and enthusiasm for the basic watchdog mission of the Center for Public Integrity.
  • At least five years of professional experience in fundraising or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise large gifts.
  • Practical knowledge of major giving and an understanding of the major gifts cycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to move four-figure donors to higher, consistent, sustained giving.
  • Superior communication, presentation, organizational and writing skills.
  • Ability to be a front-line representative of the Center for Public Integrity, to external constituencies such as prospects, donors, and the board.
  • Ability to produce events with major donors present.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office, social media, and Blackbaud fundraising software or equivalent.
  • Experience using social media to communicate, influence and fundraise.
  • Proficiency with prospect research techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
