The Campaign Legal Center (CLC) seeks a Communications Associate to develop and mange relationships with reporters and assist in developing media outreach strategies.

Founded in 2002, the Campaign Legal Center is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that defends and protects our democracy in the areas of campaign finance, voting rights, political communication and government ethics. CLC works to attack laws and regulations that undermine the fundamental rights of all Americans to participate in the political process and to defend laws that protect these interests. Working in administrative, legislative and legal proceedings, CLC shapes our nation’s laws and policies so that the right to have a voice in our free and democratic society remains the foundation of our political system. This position is based in Washington, DC.

Job Description

The CLC is seeking a talented Communications Associate to be a key member of a growing communications team. This newly created position reports to the Director of Strategic Communications and is responsible for developing and managing reporter relationships, assisting in developing media outreach strategies and writing press content such as reporter pitches, press releases, blogs and op-eds.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drafting and editing press content, including talking points, press releases, blogs, op-eds, editorial board memos, fact sheets and Q&A’s.
  • Cultivating relationships with reporters and assisting with media outreach strategies.
  • Maintaining and continuously updating media lists.
  • Responding to media calls and providing on background information as needed.
  • Tracking news clips of interest and writing rapid response content.
  • Tracking media hits, and flagging hits for dissemination on social media platforms.
  • Managing and executing events such as press calls, media availabilities and editorial board meetings.

Qualifications include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field is required.
  • One to two years of professional experience in media, strategic communications or public relations.
  • Exceptionally strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with the media and cultivating relationships with print, radio, television and online journalists.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.
  • A passion for improving our democracy and protecting the fundamental right to participate in the political process.
  • An interest in working with an exceptionally talented staff.
