Fund for the Republic (FFR) is a 501c3 grantmaking institution that broadens, strengthens and unites efforts to reduce the dominance of well-financed interests over politics and policy making through supporting strategic opportunities, catalyzing new initiatives and recruiting more philanthropists, influential leaders and advocates to the cause of reform.

POSITION

FFR seeks to hire a Director of Development to support the Executive Director (ED) and to build and lead best in class development operations.  The Director of Development will report to the Executive Director and will serve as a member of the Executive Team helping to shape the direction for FFR’s growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Based in Washington, DC, the Director of Development will help FFR meet its goals by providing leadership in the following areas:

 

Organizational Management:

  • Serve as the principal development officer and oversee all organizational fundraising efforts
  • Support the Executive Director in developing and executing a multi-year fundraising plan to ensure FFR has the resources needed for operations, programs and grant-making activities, including attracting large, multi-year gifts
  • Develop clear fundraising milestones and metrics to track progress and identify potential challenges
  • Support the Executive Director in designing and launching a Board Development Committee; serve as staff liaison to this committee

Fund-raising and Donor Relations:

  • Create and execute a strategy to secure a large, sustained base of individual donors (ideally with multi-year commitments for support) in alignment with articulated targets
  • Build and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and grow the donor pipelines
  • Support  ED in communications with potential donors, including drafting emails and other messages, documenting meeting notes and recording touch-points in CRM software
  • Develop and maintain ongoing individual relationships with major donors
  • Plan and lead funder meetings and special events, and ensure involvement of donors in key external meetings to tap their expertise and deepen engagement with FFR and the reform effort
  • Design and manage program or project-specific fund-raising campaigns as needed

Development Operations:

  • Hire, supervise, mentor and manage the development team
  • Oversee development systems and processes to support pipeline and donor management and to ensure compliance
  • Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising
  • Oversee all development-related communications including marketing materials and proposals to ensure accuracy of message and consistency of quality

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Compelling candidates will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Ten plus years of experience in a development role in a non-profit organization, with demonstrated knowledge of the unique development needs of a fast-growing social enterprise
  • Proven success in front-line fund-raising, working with high net worth individuals and foundations to secure significant gifts
  • Strong skills in investor relations and stewardship, including designing and executing community events to build a donor network
  • Experience and knowledge of development operations including pipeline and donor management, grants-tracking, etc. 
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge fund-raising software
  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrated success in proposal development
  • Superb communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to synthesize complexity, make informed decisions and develop strategic alternatives that help drive toward clarity and solutions in ambiguous and fast moving environments
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills with an overall execution orientation and high attention to detail
  • Entrepreneurialism and resourcefulness, with the ability to deliver results in a rapidly growing, deadline-driven, fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Team oriented and collaborative; flexibility and adaptability to modify plans in line with shifting priorities
  • Demonstrated experience building functions/businesses from the ground-up and the proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing organization
  • BA required, MA/MBA preferred

Location: This will be a full-time position based in Washington DC. Some travel is required.

Salary & Benefits: Fund for the Republic offers competitive salaries, including benefits for all full-time employees. Salary commensurate with experience.
