The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) seeks a talented Director of Communications who has strong strategic advocacy campaign and digital media experience to lead a growing communications team and expand ELPC’s organizational visibility, impact, and effectiveness. This is an extraordinary time in which ELPC’s legal and policy advocacy – backed by strong economic analysis, sound science, and strategic communications and public engagement – is essential to protecting our core environmental values and accelerate clean energy and clean transportation solutions to climate change.
The Environmental Law & Policy Center is the Midwest’s leading public interest environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, and among the nation’s leaders in the field. ELPC develops and leads successful strategic environmental advocacy campaigns to improve environmental quality and protect our natural heritage. We are public interest environmental entrepreneurs who engage in creative business deal-making to put into practice our belief that environmental progress and economic development can be achieved together through, for example, developing clean energy solutions and addressing climate change. ELPC’s multidisciplinary staff of 45+ talented public interest attorneys, M.B.A. environmental business specialists, policy advocates and communications specialists, brings a strong and effective combination of skills to solve environmental problems and improve the quality of life in our communities. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Lead strategic advocacy communications efforts that create attention, engagement, and support from target audiences throughout the Midwest and Washington D.C.
- Develop and execute effective communications strategies across earned media, social media, websites, video, publications, and events to advance ELPC’s message on clean energy, clean water, transportation, and natural resources.
- Create and manage an integrated digital communications strategy across all online platforms to build ELPC’s constituency and advance its policy agenda.
- Provide hands-on leadership of ELPC’s growing communications team, collaborate with ELPC’s development and advocacy staff, and partner with outside organizations.
This is a full-time position in Chicago. The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of ELPC’s senior management team.
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- At least 10 years of “hands-on” experience in successful strategic advocacy communications for nonprofit advocacy organizations and/or political campaigns.
- Bachelor’s degree required, and advanced degree preferred.
- Candidates should have demonstrated skills and successes in:
- Planning, framing, leading and executing effective strategic communications advocacy campaigns;
- Developing and mobilizing constituents via electronic communications and social media, including through compelling videos and graphics, in addition to traditional media outreach and engagement; and
- Leading, focusing and supervising a motivated team of talented communications professionals working together with legal and policy professional colleagues.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Demonstrated interest in environmental protection and an understanding of public policy.
- Sophisticated understanding of multifaceted public policy strategic advocacy campaigns that involve media, legislative, economic and policy analysis, and organizing approaches coordinated with strong and effective legal advocacy.
- An inspired and demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy and an ability to work productively as a member of ELPC’s team of skilled professionals.
- Being a team player and have a sense of humor.
SALARY: Low $100,000s depending upon experience and ELPC’s salary structure that is competitive with other major public interest environmental organizations. Excellent medical, dental, wellness and 403(b) benefits provided.
