Human Resources Manager

Job Summary

The Human Resources Manager is a full-time position and is responsible for providing proactive support and guidance on human resources procedures, policies, best practices, rewards, and risks to help achieve Alley Cat Allies’ objectives.  The position performs work relating to recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, training, compensation and benefits, performance management, career development, or separation.  The position also develops, updates, and maintains personnel policies, standard operating policies, and employee handbook as required. The Human Resources Manager leads practices and objectives that result in an employee-oriented, high performance culture.

Job Responsibilities

Staffing & Benefits:

  • With Alley Cat Allies’ leadership, identify and forecast staffing needs.  Develop and deploy strategies for recruitment and retention;
  • Create or clarify job descriptions and responsibilities;
  • Recruit and screen applicants to fill positions. Prepare and negotiate job offers. Plan and conduct orientations and on-boarding;
  • Create staff coverage plans and work with staffing agencies when appropriate;
  • Advise and participate in staff separations;
  • Coordinate compensation and benefits package;
  • Make recommendations for any additions or changes to benefits;
  • Liaise with benefits providers and assist staff with benefits questions and issues; and
  • Work with payroll agent to ensure accurate and timely earnings distributions and tax reporting.

Training & Development:

  • Develop and coordinate training and continuing education programs;
  • Create opportunities to encourage staff discourse.  Plan and deliver team-building and employee morale activities;
  • Mitigate conflicts and mediate in employee negotiations;
  • Establish a performance management system and educate the staff on its use; and
  • Develop and manage an internal leadership development program.

Other Duties:

  • Review and revise employee handbook as needed;
  • Create and modify general SOPs with staff;
  • Maintain employee files and records and compile statistical reports;
  • Prepare and execute budget for human resource operations;
  • Represent the organization in investigations and personnel-related hearings; and
  • Other duties as requested.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and PHR required
  • Minimum five years human resources experience
  • Experience delivering training and business presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to see the big picture and provide useful and strategic advice and input across the organization
  • Ability to lead and motivate in an environment of constant change
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities and projects
  • Excellent attention to detail and follow through
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player, while recognizing the nature of a small nonprofit
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to take initiative
  • Highly proficient computer skills with demonstrated knowledge and practical application of Word, Excel and other software programs as indicated
  • Knowledge of cat issues a plus
  • Previous non-profit, animal-centric experience preferred
  • Ability to work in an office with cats and dogs
