Family Values @ Work (FV@W), a national network of 25 state and local coalitions helping spur the growing movement for family-friendly workplace policies, is looking for a talented and highly-organized Development Director to implement an ambitious development plan.

 

Family Values @ Work is a leader in advocating for workplace policies such as paid sick days and family and medical leave insurance, closely aligned with the broader economic justice field. Our coalitions represent a diverse group of more than 2,000 grassroots organizations, ranging from restaurant owners to restaurant workers, faith leaders to public health professionals, think tanks to activists for children, seniors and those with disabilities, unions and leaders in the fight for gender and racial justice and LGBTQ rights. Family Values @ Work coalitions are active in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.

 

We are looking for a Development Director who is analytical and creative, who wants to collaborate with a passionate and committed staff in a highly supportive environment, and who can coordinate and manage multiple projects. We want someone with a strong record of success in raising significant gifts from individuals and foundations, who is a proven manager of people and systems, and has a deep commitment to work and family issues and gender and racial justice.

 

The Development Director will play a key role in growing the success of our network. Working closely with the Co-Directors, the Development Director will work to achieve the organization’s revenue goals, increasing income, and educating and engaging more individuals and institutions in the work of FV@W, all in service of advancing the organization’s mission. As a member of the senior staff, the Development Director works closely with the leadership team.

 

The Development Director reports to the Co-Directors.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

 

The Development Director is expected to:

 

  • Work closely with the team to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, advise on program development, organize funder briefings, and develop and meet the annual budget.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to assist them in their fundraising and to help cultivate a strong relationship between board members and donor or funder prospects.
  • Help track cultivation and prospecting activity and ensure the execution of action items.
  • Solicit contributions from major individual donors and steward long-term relationships with donors.
  • Develop relationships with prospective individual and foundation donors.
  • Research prospective institutional and individual funders.
  • Research labor giving patterns and suggest other unions to reach out to.
  • Work with staff to draft and edit proposals and reports.
  • Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with funder requirements.
  • Manage all grant activity in a central database and deliver regular reports to the Co-Directors.
  • Serve as the point person for management and maintenance of FV@W’s donor database, and ensure efficient system utilization across all units. Advise on database for partner, Labor Project for Working Families.
  • Oversee the implementation of ongoing programs to improve the renewal rates of existing annual donors.
  • Creatively use events to upgrade donors and maintain a diversity of revenue.
  • Work with the Co-Directors to develop annual budgets and income projections.
  • Stay abreast of political and philanthropic trends and ensure that Board and staff are informed of changes in legislation and other trends and initiatives that might impact giving.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

 

The ideal candidate should have the following experience and qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years fundraising experience.
  • Proven success in securing foundation and individual donor support.
  • A clear understanding of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit legal issues/structures.
  • Well-developed writing, interpersonal and organizational skills and experience managing staff.
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and understanding of relevant economic justice issues and political landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with various constituencies, including Co-Directors, staff involved in development, active board members, other senior leadership and donors.
  • Experience as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in both the spoken and written word; must be adept at crafting materials and making presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
