Description

The State Fiscal Project at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a dynamic team that influences state policy debates by producing timely, credible, and accessible research; communicating complex issues in clear and compelling ways; and delivering this analysis into the hands of lawmakers, media, grassroots organizations, and other partners who can help mobilize change. Central to this work is the Center’s support for the State Priorities Partnership. For over two decades, the Partnership, a network of 42 state-based policy and advocacy organizations, has used evidence and analysis to advance policies that give more people the opportunity to prosper. State Priorities partners equip lawmakers, journalists, advocacy organizations, nonprofit service providers, and the public with unassailable information that is used to help children obtain a quality education, help families secure medical care, and help working people get the assistance they need to build a better life.

The Deputy Director of State Communications will help the State Fiscal Project and State Priorities Partnership organizations across the country deploy cutting-edge communications strategies, tactics, and tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Center’s state communications team and their work with State Priorities Partnership organizations. This includes management of staff on state policy message development, strategy for jointly promoting research with state organizations, creation of template communications materials for partners, technical assistance on traditional and digital media strategy, and more.

  • Provide individual coaching to state-level executive directors on communications capacity, strategy, and planning, including how to better hire, develop, and support communications staff.

  • Manage communications training opportunities for member organizations in the State Priorities Partnership, including annual in-person gatherings, webinars, and online training courses.

  • Develop written content and strategies to help CBPP’s State Fiscal Project better shape debates on state policies, including through reports, blog posts, events, media interviews, and other communications products and activities.

  • Work directly with State Fiscal Project staff to help them develop stronger communications skills and more persuasively deliver our message.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree and 7 years of relevant work experience (a master’s degree is preferred and may substitute for 2 years’ experience);

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including ability to communicate about complex economic/fiscal policy issues in a way that resonates with average people;

  • Strong experience with and knowledge of social policy issues;

  • Capacity to multi-task in a deadline-driven environment and demonstrate grace under pressure.

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits, including generous health insurance options and dental coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement, MERP, DCAP, and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday schedules.
