Description

Catholics for Choice (CFC), a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that serves as a voice for Catholics who believe that the Catholic tradition supports a woman’s moral and legal right to follow her conscience in matters of sexuality and reproductive health, is looking for a talented and dynamic Director of Communications. The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies. CFC is seeking an experienced communications professional to take the reins of a prolific publications and media program. This is an opportunity to be part of a successful and fast-paced nonprofit with a close-knit staff of passionate individuals who share a commitment to reproductive choice, social justice and true religious liberty.

If you are committed to advancing abortion rights and access around the world, believe equally in the power of the written word and the impact of the right image, can communicate convincingly enough to sway your most ardent opponent to give you a fair hearing, and appreciate a long read but know that sometimes 140 characters is all you get, we want to hear from you!

This position is based in Washington, DC and reports directly to the president.

Major Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and disseminating communications products that educate the public, policymakers and the media about Catholic support for women’s autonomy in reproductive health decisions.
  • Serving as a member of senior management team.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with the media that position CFC as a key communicator of ideas and facts related to reproductive health.
  • Ensuring that the communications department reaches and exceeds annual program goals.
  • Developing, recommending, and executing writing and research strategy and projects.
  • Working with consultants to manage and produce videos and other resources for issue campaigns.
  • Serving as editor of CFC’s flagship publication, Conscience, including working closely with the president to plan editorial content, deliver high-quality, accurate, cutting-edge content on schedule, and develop and implement strategies for wide dissemination of the magazine on a regular basis and for expanded, targeted distribution based on content.
  • Providing a consistent, high-quality public image of CFC, including ensuring organization-wide adherence to CFC style and identity system, and providing final approval of all communications and program materials for external distribution.
  • Managing and creatively adapting CFC’s internet presence (including websites and online publication platforms) to ensure that CFC’s social media accounts are a dynamic source of information and explains CFC’s work in a compelling and effective way.
  • Shepherding projects such as investigative research, in-depth reporting, videos, public opinion research, campaign messaging, policy analysis, press/media materials and opinion editorials.
  • Working with leadership, staff, and consultants to maintain and enhance CFC’s reputation as the leading prochoice organization that addresses sexual and reproductive rights from a standpoint of culture, faith, and morality.
  • Managing organization archives, publications stocks, and media and research files.
  • Supervising communications department staff.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, plus six to eight years of increasingly responsible communications experience, including media management, press relations, writing, editing, and research on a range of written materials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including writing, editing, and research skills, and demonstrated ability to produce readable, appealing, and accurate written products on schedule.
  • Knowledge of and substantial contacts with U.S. and international media outlets and collegial organizations.
  • Experience in the management of communications, publishing and media relations programs and projects.
  • Experience effectively using social media to raise the profile of an organization and advance public policy issues.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience managing staff.
  • Substantial knowledge of reproductive health and rights and Catholicism.
  • Commitment to progressive public policy and the mission of CFC.
  • Be credible, cogent and clever; and have an unwavering support for a woman’s right to choose.
  • Knowledge of faith and Catholicism is desired.
  • Ability to travel internationally.

Salary and benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. Generous benefits include medical and dental insurance (CFC pays 100% of employee premium), generous paid time off (vacation, sick, personal days and holidays), 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution, commuter benefits and more.
