A highly effective social justice and civil rights focused organization designing and executing innovative civic education and engagement programs touching thousands of people of color in the south seeks a Chief Executive Officer. This 501(C)(3) organization has a budget of $2,000,000 - $5,000,000 per year, running both long term and cyclical programs to engage its intended beneficiaries. The organization has enjoyed strong and growing relationships with major donors and foundations since its inception. The successful CEO will build upon the organizations track record, aligning and sharpening its operations and brand with its strategic vision.

This position will be based in the South or Southeast, likely in Atlanta.

Role

The CEO of this social justice and civil rights focused organization aligns the organization’s operations and brand with its strategic vision. In this role, the CEO ensures the organization’s vision, objectives, and targets are consistent with its mission and responsive to its operating context. S/he leads fundraising to realize the vision. Together with the President, the CEO facilitates relationships and partnerships, and liaises with the Board to ensure members have the information and tools needed to strengthen the organization.

The CEO provides leadership and management for the President and manages the fundraising and operational staff and consultant teams. The CEO reports to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities include:

Strategy:

  • Leads staff to create objectives, targets, and operations that are aligned with the mission, vision and context.
  • Presides over processes that review performance, analyze lessons learned, and adjusts strategy as needed.
  • Recommends or approves strategic projects, structural changes and financial allocations.
  • Ensures the President and Director of Operations and Administration manage resources and personnel to achieve the strategy.
  • Establishes parameters for risk in achieving the strategy.

Development:

  • Architects the overall fundraising strategy and fundraising team, managing any fundraising consultants and/or development staff.
  • Identifies and cultivates potential foundation donors, major individual donors and low dollar fundraising channels.
  • Provides strategic frameworks for grant proposals and major gift pitches.
  • Solicits potential donors via proposals, meetings, call time, and by providing content for low dollar solicitations.
  • Maintains and builds new donor relationships directly and through the thoughtful utilization of the Board Chair, President, board members and surrogates in donor pitching and relationship building.
  • Ensures support and maintains accountability for board member fundraising requirements.
  • Participates in reviewing and sharing lessons from successful and unsuccessful fundraising efforts.

Human Resources:

  • Develop a human resource plan and budget consistent with organizational strategy.
  • Ensure necessary feedback, tools and learning opportunities are available to staff to ensure the achievement of the strategy.

Brand Management:

  • Establish priority audiences and desired brand perceptions consistent with the organization’s vision, strategy, and context.
  • Represent the organization’s brand in media, digital platforms, presentations, and meetings.
  • Approve messaging, logos and brand materials that will be regularly or widely used to represent the organization.

Relationships & Partnerships:

  • Maintain regular communication with the board on strategic matters, requesting their engagement, and reinforcing the importance of their support.
  • Define and maintain regular communication with allies.
  • Represent the organization at the strategic level in partnership meetings.
  • Cultivate relationships with new constituencies that are essential for the organization to achieve its vision.

Financial Management:

  • Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation.
    Prepare the annual budget with the President and Director of Operations and Administration.
  • Participate in efforts to recruit, and retain a talented, skilled, and diverse staff.
  • Design and document new processes as the organization grows and evolves.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • A burning passion for social justice.
    10 years experience leading dynamic 501C3 or 501C4 organizations (or similar executive leadership post).
  • An ability to develop a sound strategy, lead its implementation and objectively measure its success.
  • A track record of successful major donor and foundation fundraising.
  • Service oriented leadership skills that emphasize developing people, teams, and organizations to their fullest potential
  • A record of supporting and scaling innovative ideas and programs.
  • Intellectual curiosity.
  • An engaging, persuasive personality.
  • Risk management skills.
  • An understanding of the intersection between social justice, voting rights, political participation.
