The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP)—founded nearly 50 years ago in Washington, D.C.—is a nonpartisan, nonprofit anti-poverty organization advancing federal, state, and local policy solutions for low-income people. We view all of our work through a racial equity lens, addressing the barriers people face because of race, ethnicity, and immigration status. Low-income people are under greater threat than at any time in CLASP’s history, making our work more urgent than ever.

 

CLASP seeks an entrepreneurial, high energy, solutions-oriented senior manager for finance and administration. This recruitment is part of a broader expansion at CLASP, including expanded capacity in policy as well as legislation, outreach, and communications. This will enable us to address emerging threats to low-income people, including immigrants and people of color, while also working to advance a positive vision.
Under the leadership of the deputy executive director for finance and administration, the senior manager for finance and administration is responsible for financial and administrative management. The senior manager will work with the deputy ED to identify needs, and lead implementation of new systems. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, an independent thinker, resourceful, and eager to learn.

 

The senior manager for finance and operations will report to the deputy executive director for finance and administration and will supervise/mentor the finance and operations associate.

 

This is a full-time position located in Washington, D.C.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Financial Management

  • Oversee and take final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for a significant program area;
  • Translate financial concepts to other management members and effectively collaborate with program colleagues who may not have finance backgrounds;
  • Oversee budgeting, financial forecasting, cash flow, coordination of audit activities, IRS 990, and accounts payable and receivable.
  • Prepare or assist program staff in preparing budgets for new programs, proposals, grant reporting, and contracts;
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements, ensuring timely filing of all financial and other reporting; and
  • Oversee banking and investments, financial statements and review.

 

Administration

  • Ensure CLASP has excellent standard operating policies that reflect the organization’s culture, including operational and financial policies that are accurately documented, routinely updated to reflect best practices, and implemented throughout the organization;
  • Oversee processes to maintain all business licenses, insurance and corporate reporting, and organizational files;
  • Manage relationships with information technology consultant and other general office personnel to ensure smooth operation; and
  • Collaborate with the human resources manager and provide guidance and input to implement personnel recommendations.

 

Additional qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to improving the circumstances of vulnerable and low-income people, immigrants, and communities of color.
  • Effective implementer and comfortable in the environment of a small- to mid-sized nonprofit, where everyone takes on multiple roles and responsibilities, including strategy and implementation;
  • Bachelor’s in finance, accounting, or business administration (ideally with MBA/CPA or related certification);
  • At least 7 years of progressive relevant experience; ideally 5+ years of broad financial and operations management experience at nonprofit organizations with budgets over $5 million;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Flexibility, including ability to handle multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines;
  • Able to work collaboratively and collegially in a team environment;
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage and mentor staff and develop systems; and
  • Knowledge or experience in accounting, FMLA, and human resources to include managing payroll is also a plus.

  • Managing client teams to success.

  • Building up Megaphone to better serve in it’s mission of using PR as a tool to diversify media and the progressive movement.
  • Managing staff on a project and/or long-term basis, depending on the candidate.
  • Relationship building with partners, reporters, and fellow staff.
  • Writing drafts of diverse press materials ranging from opinion pieces to statements and memos to communications plans.

Experience:

  • 5-10 (or more) years in a combination of social justice, politics, and communications.
    • At least 3 of those years in media relations specifically.
  • Work experience in one or more of the following issue areas: criminal justice reform, climate change, environment, racial justice, economic justice, environmental justice.
  • Non-profit experience a plus.
  • PR firm experience is a plus.
  • Political campaign or Congressional experience is a plus.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

Position Objective:  Catholics for Choice (CFC) is looking for a dynamic and politically savvy press officer who can leverage traditional and new media to keep CFC’s edge as the authoritative source on Catholicism and reproductive rights. Candidates should be clear and concise communicators who can execute a proactive and aggressive media and digital engagement strategy to reach target audiences that include the general public, journalists, academics, activists and other organizations at the intersection of religion and reproductive rights. Ideal candidates would be voracious consumers of all news—from The New York Times to Buzzfeed—and not shy about pitching stories to sustain CFC’s relevance and earn media attention in a 24-hour, multi-media news cycle. Candidates should doggedly follow current events on reproductive rights and religious freedom to help position CFC’s voice in what is a fast moving and political charged environment. Applicants should equally relish a long-form piece in the New Yorker, as well as the pithy brilliance of 140 characters. Candidates should have a track-record of successfully pitching international, national and/or local media outlets.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Implement a proactive traditional and social media program that is both efficient and responsive to the needs of the media and CFC, positioning the organization as the definitive authority on reproductive health and rights and Catholicism, and the leading resource for an interested public, media outlets, academics, activists and other organizations that support CFC’s mission;
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, regular relationships with key reporters, producers and editors who cover CFC’s issues; ensure contact information and beats are up to date for all key outlets.
  • Pitch stories proactively and respond to requests from media, screening to ensure that the inquiries are relevant to CFC’s mission and program. This includes prepping spokespeople with key information about outlets and their positions on our issues.
  • Write, distribute and promote press releases strategically, and help place op-eds, letters to the editor, submissions to blogs, etc., securing expanded media coverage of CFC’s work.
  • Investigate and pursue media opportunities for CFC’s leadership and staff; expand CFC’s network of and relationships with media contacts and increase visibility of CFC with opinion-shapers and influencers on our issues.
  • Monitor new media, seeking out new outlets for CFC materials and pitches and keep ahead of the news cycle to open up opportunities so CFC can lend its voice when relevant news surfaces.
  • Implement promotional strategies that place CFC staff, publications, websites and social media platforms as the go-to sources for information about CFC’s mission interests.
  • Draft and edit social media content that lifts up the voices of CFC and its network of champions and keeps us relevant in trending conversations on our issues. Work with director of communications to develop social media toolkits to generate meaningful engagement around key advocacy moments and events.
  • Assist in ensuring our websites are current and timely with up to date information from communications and program staff.
  • Assist director of communications in providing the president, board and staff with regular monitoring and reporting of traditional and new media coverage, influencer reach and engagement metrics, with tools such as Cision, Hootsuite and Google Analytics.
  • Assist the director of communications in the management of CFC’s media campaigns.
  • Assist CFC staff in other efforts to promote CFC’s message and mission in Washington, abroad and at the grassroots.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of communications and/or journalism experience in advocacy-oriented media campaigns, political communications and media relations.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and an ability to work quickly and accurately on tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with DC-based and national press corps preferred and international press experience a plus.
  • A high degree of computer literacy, including word processing, desktop publishing, database management and web skills, including social media and ideally familiarity with management tools such as Cision, Meltwater and Hootsuite.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Catholicism and reproductive health issues.
  • Commitment to reproductive rights and the mission of CFC.
  • Work inside a newsroom and/or Hill experience a plus.

Catholics for Choice (CFC) is looking for a talented, proactive Senior Associate for Development— with a track record of success—that can work with the President to cultivate and grow CFC’s donor base. CFC is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that serves as a voice for Catholics who believe that the Catholic tradition supports a woman’s moral and legal right to follow her conscience in matters of sexuality and reproductive health. This is an opportunity to be part of a fast-paced, mission-driven nonprofit with a close-knit staff of passionate individuals who share a commitment to reproductive choice, social justice and true religious liberty.

The Senior Associate for Development works with the president to develop and implement a comprehensive national fundraising strategy to raise $3 million annually to support CFC’s initiatives. This includes the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of foundation grants and major gift from individuals. Catholics for Choice is looking for someone who is committed to advancing reproductive health and abortion rights and access around the world and has demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful fundraising program. Candidates should be able to demonstrate concrete success raising and securing funds.

This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the president.

Major Responsibilities Include:
• Identifying, cultivating, and retaining foundation and individual donors.
• Managing proposals and reports for foundations and appeals to individual donors.
• Ensuring timely and complete fulfillment of activities and expenditures consistent with grant agreements, including working with program and communications staff to capture impact and success stories through monitoring and evaluation of programs.
• Monitoring economic and interest factors relating to philanthropy in general, and to funding trends on issues relative to CFC’s mission and to CFC’s donor base to ensure adequate diversity in institutional support and responsiveness to funding opportunities and challenges.
• Preparing routine and special correspondence including acknowledgement of gifts and grants, program updates and items of interest to donors.
• Preparing appeals to individual donors twice a year, or more as required.
• Preparing internal program reports for senior staff.
• Ensuring adherence to obligations of grant agreements.
• Maintaining physical files and database records for individual and foundation donors.
• Participating in forecasting, prospecting, and most importantly, capture planning for foundation and individual donors.
• Administering occasional in-house solicitations and coordinating with an external direct mail vendor for other direct mail solicitations.
• Administering the Combined Federal Campaign activities and mailings.

Qualifications Include:
• Bachelor’s degree and six or more years’ of development experience, with an emphasis on foundation fundraising.
